Mermaid Gala

Today we went to a mermaid gala at the Civic in Barnsley.

The area had been decorated with bunting and there were ladies dressed
in 1940's gear serving tea.

Rosanna was transformed into a mermaid...

An open-air performance with a group of modern day mermaids
on dry land demonstrate synchronised swimming.

This part reminded me of the Russian gymnasts we saw last year.

Hoola hooping workshop

You can hear the sea when you listen in a shell,

or can you?
We got a surprise when listening to this shell,
it played itsy-bitsy, teeny-weeny yellow polka dot bikini!

Werewolves of Rotherham - Song writing workshop with Ray Hearne.

Today we went on a song writing workshop with
Rotherham folk singer Ray Hearne.

The session began with a magic spell song.
Then a brain storming session firstly to find
a magical creature to write a song about.
A long list was compiled and then werewolf was chosen.
Next more brainstorming.
What does the werewolf look like?
Where does it live?
Who is it?
After this everyone went off to write a four line verse.

Reuben and my mum writing their verses for the song.

Ray Hearne giving us some writing tips!

Compiling the final song...

The kids sang the chorus all the way home on the bus!

Dancing in the kitchen...

We always have a favourite song of the moment, a song that we sing at the top of our voices and do wild dance moves to. When the first few lines are played the kids appear and a few minutes of anything goes.

Recently Jessie J price tag came on the radio, that was one our old favourites that's now passed and I realised we'd almost forgotten. So from now on I'm going to try and keep track of our favourite tunes.
At the moment we've got two clear favourites, Bruno Mars - When I was your man and...

As usual we only know one line of Mr B's song!

What are you dancing to at the moment? We' love it if you'd leave a comment or post the song on your blog and we'll come and listen.
Let's get the world dancing!

Volatile light -mechanical sound and light environment

The Civic in Barnsley, hosted 'Volatile light'.
It is a mechanical sound and light environment with several layers of interest.

Firstly you saw the lights moving on their mechanisms in a semi lit room.

Then the background lights went off to show the just the lights moving,
with the mechanisms how hidden, it reminded me of stars and planets moving.

You could also watch the recorded trajectories of the lights
forming trails on large screens.

Everyone's favourite part of the exhibition was where you could create your own light painting, using light sabres, light up glasses and spinning wheels.

Choose a light up object ...

... make shape patterns with it and see it projected onto the screen.

The exhibition is touring the country and well worth a look, here is a link to iou volatile light

music workshops

Imogen, Mima & Reuben took part in music workshops, the girls first workshop was acappella steel band, and later in the week a guitar lesson. Reuben took part in music workshop, but he wasn't too impressed by it.
While the kids were in workshops, I got to drink Starbucks coffee and read magazines, well at least for a little while Rosanna played with the ELC toys!
