What fraction of the earth is land?

What fraction of the earth is dry land?

I posed this question to Imogen and Jemima.

The girls began tackling the task, by looking at the globe and the continents.

Next, they found the area of each continent and the area of the earth.

The internet was used, but an atlas could also be used.

The fraction was composed:

Total area of the continents/area of the earth

To make it slightly easier to simplify the fractions

we rounded each figure to the nearest hundred.

After each fraction simplification, we rounded up or down to the nearest hundred. We kept repeating the process until the fraction could no longer be simplified.

And our answer is...

The earth is 3/10 land and 7/10 water.

Map reading

We got the girls to follow the map as we drove and to tell us the roads we were on and any landmarks we might see along the way. We had had the map about 10 years, so on one road the girls were expecting to see a post office, it has shut down, but we could tell the girls were following the map!

Wednesday
The day started with abit of Postcrossing -Imogen wrote a card to Somewhere and Jemima to America. We received a card from Finland this week. Imogen's first card she sent to Russia still hasn't got there.
We then took Reuben and Rosanna to toddler group we go for the last hour so that everyone is happy.
Back for lunch and then off to post the letters.
Maths Jemima did some two digit and two digit adding together. Imogen internet based multiplication.

Post crossing

We received our first post crossing card from Berlin.

Post crossing

We've sent our first two post crossing postcards, one to Russia and the other to Portugal. We've sent postcards with pics of Wentworth castle, the people who receive the cards will be impressed with Barnsley!
